Creosote oil is a complex combination of hydrocarbons obtained by the distillation of wood tar. It consists primarily of aromatic hydrocarbons and may contain appreciable quantities of tar acids and tar bases. Creosote oil has been used for meat preservation, wood treatment, and for medicinal purposes as an expectorant, anti-septic, astringent, anaesthetic and laxative.
